A 12-minute listen.

Our latest guest in this mini series of remote podcasts is Ryan Hughes, head of active portfolios at AJ Bell, who talks us through his experience of dealing with fund managers during lockdown, and gives us reasons for optimism in Asia.

Ryan stresses that those managers without a repeatable process will struggle during times of volatility, but then that has always been the case.

He also outlines how, while some active mangers will thrive in an eventual recovery, others could suffer further. Investors, therefore, must tread carefully.

“Value investing has been absolutely hammered, and has been underperforming for some time, whereas the quality growth style, and technology, has held up pretty well,” he says.

“Defensive managers have on the whole done okay, while small-cap managers have been hit hard. So there’s not a one-size-fits-all answer to whether active managers will rebound.”

Please note, there were audio issues with this call so it has been edited to take out the worst affected areas.
