Panel shines a well-deserved light on the often-unsung heroes of the profession

A 25 minute watch

The latest discussion in our Building Better Financial Services Expo sees Tony Slimmings of Paraplanning Hub and The Private Office’s Rachel Walker talk to Sam Shaw how their roles shouldn’t be seen as stepping stones to, or somehow ‘less than’, those of advisers, rather just requiring very different, complementary, skills.

It’s not a new thing for an experienced and qualified paraplanner to sit in on a meeting, just the industry has taken a long time to get to accepting that. It’s time to get rid of any false hierarchy.

Outsourced and contractual services, paraplanning academies and showcasing particular specialisms within the paraplanning space are becoming more widely adopted approaches.

What makes a success?  A rare blend of talents, says Tony:

“Attention to detail, the ability to multitask, ability to focus, to think analytically and practically and still be able to articulate that…”

During the pandemic we have picked up signals that solid paraplanners are in high demand, and being sought after for premium rates. And rightly so, as this discussion will delve into.

What would it take to attract fresh young talent?

“Variety; lots of different types of work to get my teeth into and the opportunity to go to a meeting now and then. That, plus having a strong supportive team, especially during exams.”

Rachel shares some of the things she loves about her role and team (and no, don’t go trying to recruit her!)
