A 20-minute watch.

In the first of our Selector Series video interviews, Ben Seager-Scott, head of multi-asset funds at Tilney Group, talks Gary Shepherd through how he delivers his clients the “best bang for your buck”, and digging for genuine ESG gems.

Ben stresses how, frankly, you cannot ignore ESG if you are investing on a long-term basis. Still he remains cynical about marketing departments ruling the roost when it comes to promoting ESG funds – you must do thorough due diligence to find groups that do it properly.

In a wide-ranging discussion, Ben also talks about why a recession is a natural part of a healthy cycle, and why central banks and governments may be encouraging a mild slowdown. A combination of central bank activity and anticipated fiscal stimulus could be key to easing us through tougher times ahead.

Ben also tells us how he and his team hunt out the real high-conviction stockpickers, avoiding the oversupply of “mediocre, sub-standard managers” that exist in the retail funds space.
