Our latest guest talking investments is John Bellamy, head Waverton Investment Management’s managed funds service. He tells us why he is “not rushing headfirst” into risk assets and ruminates on the big challenge for active managers today.
Once fund of funds, John and his team have now taken a more hands on approach to picking direct equities and stocks, which he says has added benefit in the current tough conditions.
“In times of crisis, it comes as great comfort to have your money close to you,” he says.
“We haven’t been running a portfolio of 15-20 funds so we are not reliant upon ‘I hope that manager has done this’ or ‘I hope that manager has taken risk off the table’. All of those decisions are entirely down to us”.
John also talks about a future of extreme differentiation between passive and active funds, with the latter facing more pressure to prove they are doing what they say they are doing, and at the right price.
