A 37-minute listen.

In the latest Octo podcast, Andrew Merricks, head of investments at Skerritts, tells Gary Shepherd why his generation has created a bubble of complacency around the long-term health of the global economy.

Andy shares his irritation on those waiting for ‘normalisation’ when the reality is the global economy changed permanently after the 2008 financial crisis.

He says: “When people say they are waiting for interest rates to normalise, and 11 years on they still haven’t got it, that actually means we’ll probably run out of time before they get back to their normal, which is interest rates at 5% plus.”

In the discussion, Andy also picks out the key investment themes that he believes will deliver in the years ahead, including cyber-security and robotics, while warning investors to conduct proper due diligence on thematic ETFs.

He also talks us through his unconventional journey from teaching to financial services, and why he believes supporting his beloved Crystal Palace FC is the perfect analogy for value investing.
