A 13-minute watch.

In the latest Octo Selectors Series video, Shane Balkham, CIO at Beaufort Investment, talks to Gary Shepherd about his journey from IFA to DFM, and the next stage in launching funds.

Having run model portfolios for some time, the firm recently launched its first unitised funds, Multi-Asset Blend Balanced and Growth Funds.

Shane talks about the benefits, including CGT management, and daily trading.

“We can ultimately take the best of both worlds with some active, some passive, and blend those together for hopefully a better outcome, and we can be more competitive on fees, and more nimble in the market place,” he says.

Shane also gives us insight into the characteristics he is looking for in external managers, particularly those who are “building their reputation, not living off their reputation”.

He adds: “There are a lot of managers who have got to their capacity size, are too big, and then the performance will tail off. We are looking for the guys who are hungry, passionate and want to grow their assets within the right level of capacity.”

The interview also touches upon use of alternatives, and the success of ethical models.

You can read a long form interview with Shane as part of our ongoing Octo Selectors Series, coming soon.
